A Reporter is hired as a journalist in service of the members.
The Reporter keeps a critical eye on the Executive, Facilitator, and overall association. They ask questions, get answers, and publish articles in a regular newsletter to the members. This role ensures transparency and promotes accountability.
The Reporter role is one of three independent authorities, expected to work cooperatively with the Executive and Facilitator, but also remain critical of each other in the service of the members.
The Reporter is responsible for observing, investigating and publishing important news about the organization to its members.

- Role is established in the by-laws
- Hired directly by the organization
- Accountable directly to the members (via regular evaluations)
- Observes all activities of the organization, especially Executive and member participation
- Publishes regular updates to all members (e.g. minimum 2 articles a month)
- Requires journalistic professionalism; factual and with due diligence; critical but fair; unbiased but in support of the membership values; timely
- Supported by Executive through proactive reporting, open data and responding promptly to information requests
- Independent of the Executive
Responsibilities and Pay
- Minimum of 2 hours a week, more for larger and or more complicated associations
- Minimum one newsletter every two months, more often for organizations going through changes
- Could be paid a stipend (i.e. semi volunteer) or wages
